Three women are at work in the props and wardrobe department of a large theatrical properties company. They field calls, take orders and fill requisitions for theater, casino, cruise and special event stage shows.
Each is an experienced entertainer anxious to leave this ‘day job’ and get back on stage. The boss is an off-stage voice coming from a window-walled office situated above the audience. Heard, but never seen, he is a source of agitation and humor. Entering and exiting from an off-stage rolling warehouse door, a tap-dancing, wire-walking, roller-skating, body-tumbling, prop-box-juggling delivery man makes every pick-up and delivery an adventure.
Auditions, job orders and phone calls provoke ‘we could do that’ responses and impromptu performances. With accessories gathered from ‘on-hand’ stock, the three talented women and one very versatile delivery man parody and portray moments from a dozen different stage productions. Presenting a diverse sampling of actual showroom attractions, such as USO, ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s Nostalgia, Legends, Follies, Dance, Speakeasy, Broadway Revue, Cultural/Ethnic, Radio and Television Salutes, Day Jobs is an intriguing and amusing look at the spectrum of entertainment presented on showroom stages everywhere.
The action, movement and pace are a busy slice of work-a-day life. The transitions, devices and segues that take us from one song to another are quick, concise and very clever. Audience members will quickly relate to the setting and situation while enjoying an intriguing peek into the duties, discussions and desires of three fascinating females.
Infused with energy, attitude, great music and tons of unexpected fun, Day Jobs is a good time.
