A Saturday’s Child presents a series of dramatic vignettes portraying historical re-enactments of famous personages who appeared at the NJ State Fairgrounds. The hour-long program would be broken into four fifteen-minute performances spaced throughout the day and given at four selected sites. It is ‘theater in the park’.
The four celebrities to be featured are:
· Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood, the first female presidential candidate to run with a campaign backed by a political party speaking at the NJ State Fairgrounds in1888
· Annie Oakley challenges sharpshooter, Miles Johnson, to a shooting match in 1888. Oakley wins!
· Harriet Quimby, one of only 2 women with an aviator’s license at the time, performs aerial stunts in 1911.
· Lucky Teeter (billed as “King of Daredevils”) thrills audiences with his ‘Hell Drivers’ in 1938.
There will be a corp of reporters and photographers questioning Ms Lockwood’s campaign speech; asking Ms Oakley about her victory, her life and her tours with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show; getting the inside story on Ms Quimby’s remarkable aerial accomplishments; and interviewing the seemingly indestructible Mr Teeter.
These appearances will be announced throughout the day by newspaper boys handing out flyers citing times and locations. The appearances will also be attended by ‘extras’ in the audience. All characters will be casted, scripted, rehearsed and will appear in period-precise costume.
‘Day at the Fair’ is an original theatrical production created by A Saturday’s Child as a special event to celebrate the 75 years of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds, and well represents the versatility of the company’s ‘Close Encounters’ catalog.
